Bodegas Vinatigo is the engine of the Canary Islands wine revival, founded by Juan Jesus Mendez Siverio, who has spent decades rescuing the islands' indigenous grapes. Lomo de la Era is a single-site white that digs deeper into Tenerife's volcanic terroir, with more concentration and texture than the entry-level bottlings. From northern Tenerife's black volcanic soils, it shows the saline, mineral intensity that puts Canary whites in a category of their own. A small-production wine worth seeking out.

Robert Parker

93 points

"The 2023 Lomo de la Era was produced with Listán Blanco grapes from a cordón trenzado plot of vines in the Sant Cruz lieu-dit, or paraje, in the Orotava Valley on sandy, silty and basalt soils. The juice from the pressing with part of the stems was let to settle and fermented in amphorae with indigenous yeasts and matured in concrete with lees that were not stirred for nine months. It has good ripeness and 12.7% alcohol (12%) with notes of white fruit, flowers and some earthiness, with herbal flavors and a bitter twist in the finish. It's medium-bodied with balance, pungent flavors and a clean finish. 1,433 bottles were filled in July 2024."

More about Bodegas Vinatigo

Juan Jesús Méndez founded Vinatigo in 1990 to recover almost-extinct Canary Island grape varieties. Working with Fernando Zamora from Rovira i Virgili University, he identified and catalogued 80+ indigenous varieties. Now all holdings are farmed organically or biodynamically; grapes are hand-harvested and fermented with indigenous yeasts. It's ampelographic rescue and indigenous wine justice made tangible on Tenerife.
