Bodegas Vinatigo is the engine of the Canary Islands wine revival, founded by Juan Jesus Mendez Siverio, who has spent decades recovering the islands' nearly extinct grapes. Tintilla is one of those rescued varieties, here grown on the volcanic slopes of Teno in northwestern Tenerife. It makes a savory, spice-driven red with real grip and an unmistakable volcanic minerality. For drinkers tired of the usual suspects, this is a genuinely different red with a great backstory.

More about Bodegas Vinatigo

Juan Jesús Méndez founded Vinatigo in 1990 to recover almost-extinct Canary Island grape varieties. Working with Fernando Zamora from Rovira i Virgili University, he identified and catalogued 80+ indigenous varieties. Now all holdings are farmed organically or biodynamically; grapes are hand-harvested and fermented with indigenous yeasts. It's ampelographic rescue and indigenous wine justice made tangible on Tenerife.
