This is a single-vineyard Syrah from Larner Vineyard, made in 2003, which was the last harvest before founder Michael Bonaccorsi died suddenly in January 2004 at 43. That gives the bottle real weight. Bonaccorsi came to winemaking from the dining room. He was the twentieth American to earn the Master Sommelier diploma and ran the wine program at Spago before founding his Central Coast winery in 1999 to make Burgundian- and RhΓ΄ne-style wines. The house goal was concentration with delicacy rather than sheer power. Today his brothers Rich and Joe carry on with their wives Desiree and Mary Clare. For all his credentials, Michael believed the palate that mattered most was your own. So open this mature bottle and decide for yourself.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"Deep ruby-red. Superripe aromas of dark raspberry, pepper, flowers, smoke and animal fur. Creamy-sweet to the point of confectionery, yet the red berry and red cherryflavors are given shape by juicy acidity. Sweet but not at all sloppy. Finishes firmly tannic, with lingering sweetness." β€”Stephen Tanzer

Robert Parker

92 points

"The 2003 Syrah Larner Vineyard is a hedonistic offering. Big, smoky, bacon fat, creme de cassis, violet, espresso roast, and toasty oak aromas soar from the glass of this complex, harmonious, opulent offering. Although it is impossible to resist, its abundant power, richness, and stuffing suggest it will age beautifully for 7-8 years." β€”Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Braised lamb shoulder with olives and rosemary; duck confit with lentils; grilled quail with mushrooms; aged ComtΓ© or Tomme de Savoie.

Tasting Profile

Expect the house aim of concentration with delicacy: dark berry and plum fruit, black pepper and a savoury, smoky edge, with leather and earthy notes as Syrah in this style ages. It's typically medium- to full-bodied, with fresh acidity and fine-grained tannins, and finishes dry and long. Think of a riper, sunnier take on Northern RhΓ΄ne Syrah.
