From a block of unirrigated bushvines planted between 1957 and 1960 at 450 to 500 meters on Citrusdal Mountain, old enough to carry South Africa's heritage vineyard certification. The fruit is fermented spontaneously, split between 400-liter French barrels and a concrete egg, then held six months on the lees before blending and bottling. Complex and elegant, it delivers concentrated pear, white peach and citrus with mouth-watering acidity and a mineral core, closing with real salinity. Botanica was founded in 2009 by Ginny Povall, an American who bought a Stellenbosch protea farm and became a winegrower; the Mary Delany Collection is her range from sourced parcels, its labels carrying the cut-paper botanical collages of the 18th-century British artist. Ginny Povall left America for South Africa's Stellenbosch in 2008, bought Protea Heights farm, and started planting both indigenous flowers and organically-farmed vines. The 21.6-hectare farm grows 10 hectares of indigenous flowers blooming year-round and 5 hectares of high-density biodynamic vineyards. Through regenerative agriculture, they increase soil fertility, build biodiversity, and craft Cabernet-based blends with purpose. It's wine with integrity.
