Timorasso was effectively extinct: a Piedmontese white grape that once covered a quarter of the vineyards around Tortona and was wiped out by phylloxera, then abandoned in favor of easier varieties. Walter Massa brought it back single-handedly from the late 1980s, and coined Derthona, the Roman name for Tortona, as the badge for serious, 100% Timorasso bottlings. Luigi Boveri farms 28 hectares at Costa Vescovato in these Apennine foothills, where the calcareous marl gives the grape its cutting mineral drive; he took over from his grandfather's mixed farm in 1992 and turned it fully over to wine, and his children Francesco, Matteo and Sara now work alongside him. Timorasso is that rare white with real structure and staying power, so this is delicious young but genuinely rewards three to five years, when the citrus gives way to hay, hazelnut and beeswax.
