You can trace this gin back to the field. The base spirit is distilled from heirloom wheat (Red Fife, Warthog and Rouge de Bordeaux) grown organically on Branchwater's own farm in Milan, in New York's Hudson Valley. Robin Touchet and Kevin Pike bought the abandoned farm in 2014 and set out to bring it back with regenerative farming. They've given up tilling, and they grow tall, old wheat varieties because they plough as little as possible and have to harvest above the cover crops. The distillery was designed by Hans Reisetbauer. Grain goes from the mill straight into production, and each ferment is distilled as soon as it finishes to keep its fruitiness. From there the triple-distilled wheat spirit is made into gin with certified-organic botanicals, including juniper, citrus and cardamom, rested in steel and brought down to 43% with water from the family's well. The farm itself goes back to the late 1700s (the village's first mayor lived there), and this gin is a good argument that a clear spirit can taste like a specific place.

More about Branchwater Farms

Branchwater Farms is a working Hudson Valley farm that happens to have a distillery, and its gin starts in the field.

Kevin Pike and Robin Touchet bought their land in Milan, New York, in 2014. They grow their own grain, farm regeneratively and distill on steam-heated copper pot stills. Gin came first, made while their brandies and whiskey aged.

The gin is distilled three times from wheat grown on the farm, with an organic botanical blend that includes juniper, citrus and cardamom, then brought down to 43% with the farm's own well water. The model was Austrian distiller Hans Reisetbauer's Blue Gin, with more citrus. Crisp and clean: an excellent martini gin, and very good with tonic.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

A classic dry martini with a lemon twist, or a gin and tonic with a strip of lemon peel. With food, try raw oysters, dill-cured gravlax on rye, or smoked trout with crème fraîche and pickled shallots.

Tasting Profile

Bright lemon and juniper on top, over a malty, grain-driven richness that gives the gin real body. Dry and unsweetened, bottled at 43% ABV.

On the rocks or in a cocktail

The story of Branchwater captivated me but the savory juniper-ie taste sold me. Rarely have I come across a gin I would love to sip, Branchwater checks all the boxes: flavorful, smooth, and familiar yet unique. All around it is a lovely gin that I would highly recommend to both non-traditional and traditional gin drinkers.
