Brezza’s Barolo Bricco Sarmassa 2006 is a wine that captures the depth and power of Barolo, offering both the richness of Nebbiolo and the elegance of one of Piedmont’s most celebrated vineyards. From the Bricco Sarmassa vineyard in Monforte d’Alba, this wine showcases the beauty that can emerge after years of careful aging.

The nose opens with a complex array of dark fruit—black cherry, plum, and blackberry—interwoven with the classic aromas of dried rose petals, leather, and tobacco. As the wine breathes, earthy nuances of truffle, forest floor, and spice—cinnamon, clove—begin to emerge, adding further depth. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and structured, with firm tannins that have softened with age, lending the wine a velvety mouthfeel. The acidity is well-integrated, offering freshness while allowing the rich fruit and earthy elements to shine. The finish is long, with lingering dark fruit and subtle minerality, leaving a lasting impression of complexity and grace.

This Barolo is perfect with hearty dishes like braised meats, roasted game, or truffle risotto. While it is already drinking beautifully, Brezza’s Barolo Bricco Sarmassa 2006 will continue to evolve over the next decade, rewarding those who allow it further time to develop. A true expression of Barolo, it blends power, elegance, and the unmistakable character of Nebbiolo from one of the region’s best vineyards.

"Thanks to its plush and velvety nature, this is a wine with universal appeal. Barolo Bricco Sarmassa opens in big fashion with aromas of black cherry, Indian spice, vanilla and dark espresso bean. It's tight and tannic in the mouth but, fundamentally, the wine's saving grace is that it's never too extracted or overblown. "

More about Brezza

While we are fortunate that the fashion for big & bold, flashy & opulent has seen its day in Barolo, that doesn't mean that every traditionally made Barolo manages to achieve the harmony and elegance that we seek—but Brezza delivers.

The wines from this address have always been good, but they've become truly fine in recent years. Enzo is the driving force behind the huge step up in quality that this old estate has taken in the past decade or so, as well as their conversion to organic viticulture. He makes unfailingly honest and delicate wines of purpose.

Brezza's wines are all from hand-harvested estate fruit and are fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. The Baroli are aged in 3,000L untoasted Slavonian oak botti. None of the wines are fined or filtered. The results are classic beauties of red fruit and charm.
