If Cannubi is Brezza's perfume, Sarmassa is its structure. Just across the Barolo village hill, Sarmassa carries more clay and less sand than its famous sibling — the wines come out denser, more muscular, with a longer arc into maturity. Enzo Brezza (trained under his father Oreste and his godfather Bartolo Mascarello) was firmly in command by 1999, and the great classical vintage gave him exactly the raw material his traditional house style is built for: long macerations, big Slavonian botti, no compromises. Twenty-six years on, this is in the heart of its window — the structure now polished, the dark Barolo fruit still very much alive. A serious mature Barolo for a serious table.

"The 1999 Barolo Sarmassa is striking. Today, the 1999 is in a glorious spot. The tannins have begun to soften yet remain firm, while the aromas and flavors are in total harmony. Sweet red berries, flowers, mint, anise, spices and licorice are some of the many notes that are woven together in the glass. Utterly beguiling from start to finish, the 1999 represents a gorgeous expression of classic, old-school Barolo. A delicate finish infused with dried flowers rounds things out in style. This is a gorgeous Barolo from Brezza." —Antonio Galloni

More about Brezza

While we are fortunate that the fashion for big & bold, flashy & opulent has seen its day in Barolo, that doesn't mean that every traditionally made Barolo manages to achieve the harmony and elegance that we seek—but Brezza delivers.

The wines from this address have always been good, but they've become truly fine in recent years. Enzo is the driving force behind the huge step up in quality that this old estate has taken in the past decade or so, as well as their conversion to organic viticulture. He makes unfailingly honest and delicate wines of purpose.

Brezza's wines are all from hand-harvested estate fruit and are fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. The Baroli are aged in 3,000L untoasted Slavonian oak botti. None of the wines are fined or filtered. The results are classic beauties of red fruit and charm.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Brasato al Barolo, hare ragu over pappardelle, or a wood-roasted beef rib. The denser structure handles richer fare than Cannubi — bring out the truffle if you have it.

Tasting Profile

Dark cherry, dried orange peel, leather, tobacco, and earth. The palate is firm and savory, with resolved but still-present tannins and a long, mineral, almost smoky finish.
