This is Brovia's one Barolo from outside Castiglione Falletto, and tasting it beside their home crus makes Serralunga and Castiglione feel like separate planets. Ca' Mia comes from a single hectare in the Brea vineyard, facing southeast at 350 meters, planted in 1955 — the family's oldest parcel and the source of their most powerful and slowest-evolving Barolo. Brovia has been in Castiglione Falletto since 1863 and works the traditional way: three weeks or more on the skins, at least two years in large botti, bottled unfiltered, with organic farming in the vineyard. The 2022 was a severe drought year in the Langhe that surprised everyone by giving juicy tannins and floral perfume rather than heaviness, and this east-facing slope, spared the worst of the afternoon sun, held onto its freshness. Serralunga's frame still asserts itself, so give it a long decant now or five more years lying down. Only about 3,500 bottles made in all.

"The 2022 Barolo Brea Vigna Ca' Mia is a potent, inward wine, as it so often is. Then again, we are in Serralunga, in one of the wilder, more forested parts of the village. A wine of stature and breeding, the 2022 is going to need at least a few years to come into its own. Macerated dark cherry, sage, gravel, menthol, licorice and coffee add to an impression of somber gravitas. There's a ton of potential here." —Antonio Galloni

"With fruit from the old vines of the Brea vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba, the Brovia 2022 Barolo Brea Vigna Ca' Mia is initially reserved and benefits from a little extra time in the decanter. Showing a medium-dark appearance, the wine reveals aromas of candied cherry, lilac and sweet spice that segue to rusty nail and graphite. There is a touch of sweetness on the close (with a 15% alcohol content), but the wine also delivers greater volume and textural depth than many of the estate's 2022 Barolos from Castiglione Falletto. The naturally more structured personality of Serralunga d'Alba comes through clearly in this vintage, lending added concentration and persistence." —Monica Larner

More about Brovia

Neal Rosenthal has worked with the Brovias for decades, since he imported the 1978, one of the great years of the last half century for sure.

The farming here by the Brovia sisters Cristina & Elena and Elena's husband, Alex, is natural, using zero chemicals in the vineyard. This approach continues in the cellar where the indigenous-yeast fermentations in old, glass-lined concrete tanks took about a month this vintage. Always a pretty old-fashioned house, Brovia has recommitted to more traditional elevage. In 2008 they reintroduced large Slavonian casks for the first 18 months of aging, followed by another year and a half in French oak (previously, the wood was all French; both are 30hL).

But the best part is the family's vineyards. With holdings in Altenasso (Garblèt Sue'), Villero, and Rocche di Castiglione, Brovia underscores Castiglione Falletto's crossroads nature. Standing at the meeting point of Serralunga's Helvetian limestone soils of in the east and the sandier Tortonian ones to the west, CF vineyards vary enormously, and Brovia's bottlings offer a unique annual survey of what's happening in the zone.

And, as if that weren't enough, there are the vines in Serralunga at Brea, a cru that was featured in Renato Ratti's famous '70s-era map of Barolo's top sites, but which fell off collectors' radar for many decades. Preeminent cartographer and Barolo expert Alessandro Masnaghetti credits the Brovias with returning Brea to its former high regard.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Brasato al Barolo, tajarin with butter and white truffle, roast guinea fowl, or a wedge of aged Castelmagno.

Tasting Profile

Deep and savory: dark cherry and rose over moss, truffle and forest underbrush. Full-bodied, with firm gripping tannins and bright acidity, and a long earthy finish. Still tightly wound — give it air.
