Here's a Barbaresco from one of the appellation's most important single vineyards, made by one of Nebbiolo's true masters, and it now has more than a quarter-century of age. Bruno Giacosa believed Nebbiolo needed no French barriques or modern tweaks, only time in large oak and a real understanding of terroir. That classical approach is the reason people hunt down his older bottles. Giacosa bought vineyards in Asili, in the village of Barbaresco, in the 1980s. His parcels face south to southwest at about 250 metres, on clay-calcareous soil with a good share of sand. We've called Giacosa's Asili the most perfumed cru in Barbaresco, and this is classy, classical Nebbiolo. It's a bottle for a special dinner with people who'll appreciate what's in the glass.

Antonio Galloni

92 points

"Amber-edged medium red. Very sweet but vibrant nose combines cherry, redcurrant, marzipan, brown spices and a whiff of game. Wonderfully sweet and sappy in the mouth, with perfectly integrated acidity giving the wine compelling vinosity. Lifted by a strong floral perfume. Finishes with firm, fine tannins and terrific length. Another '98 with a near-perfect balance of fruit and acid." —Stephen Tanzer

Robert Parker

93 points

"Giacosa's 1998 Barbaresco Asili needs 4-5 years of cellaring. It exhibits a dark ruby color along with a big, sweet nose of dried herbs, cedar, tobacco, tar, and red fruits. Opulent on the attack, with moderately high tannin as well as good underlying acidity, this is a fragrant effort for Giacosa." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Wine Spectator

"Ripe strawberry and raspberry character on the nose. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and lots of attractive fresh fruit. There's an underlying mushroom and raw meat character as well."

More about Bruno Giacosa

Bruno Giacosa passed away in 2018, but his legacy defines classical Barolo and Barbaresco. He was convinced that Nebbiolo doesn't need French barriques or modern tweaks—only time in large oak and genuine understanding of terroir. His golden palate earned him recognition as an 'icon of Piedmont' and a 'guardian of the traditional style,' and his wines are objects of desire for good reason. These are classical expressions of Nebbiolo made by someone who understood the grape's infinite complexity.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Brasato al Barolo (beef braised in red wine), tajarin with shaved white truffle, porcini risotto, roast pheasant, or aged Castelmagno.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic perfumed Barbaresco profile: red cherry, violet and tar, with dried herbs and an earthy, savoury edge. Ageing in large oak keeps the focus on fruit and flowers rather than vanilla, over firm tannin and lively acidity (think a more graceful Barolo). With age, the style moves toward leather, truffle and dried fruit on a long, dry finish.
