Bruno Giacosa's Asili — the most perfumed cru in Barbaresco, from one of Piedmont's great classical vintages, twenty-four years on. 2001 was Bruno still at the helm, and the wine carries the unmistakable Giacosa signature: silken texture, inner sweetness, a sense of weightless precision that few producers ever match. Asili sits on the southwest-facing slope of Barbaresco village and gives wines built on floral lift rather than brute power — and Giacosa's hand has always brought out the cru's most aromatic side. This bottling was released under the white label (not the Riserva red label), so it's the standard cuvée rather than the long-aged Riserva — but a 2001 Giacosa Barbaresco at twenty-four years is still the kind of wine that stops conversation when it hits the glass.

"The 2001 Barbaresco Asili is a Red Label in everything but name. It shows all the classic Asili signatures but with more darkness, breath and overall power than the 2000 tasted alongside it. Black cherry, plum, spice, leather, tobacco, menthol and licorice build in a substantial Barbaresco that hits all the right notes." —Antonio Galloni

More about Bruno Giacosa

Bruno Giacosa passed away in 2018, but his legacy defines classical Barolo and Barbaresco. He was convinced that Nebbiolo doesn't need French barriques or modern tweaks—only time in large oak and genuine understanding of terroir. His golden palate earned him recognition as an 'icon of Piedmont' and a 'guardian of the traditional style,' and his wines are objects of desire for good reason. These are classical expressions of Nebbiolo made by someone who understood the grape's infinite complexity.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Veal with morel cream, roast pheasant, tajarin with butter and white truffle, or a great aged Bra Duro. Asili rewards delicate preparations that don't fight the wine's aromatic finesse.

Tasting Profile

Floral and lifted: rose petal, dried cherry, tar, plum pit, camphor, saline earth. Silken tannin, that Giacosa inner sweetness on the mid-palate, and a long, perfumed finish. Elegance over power.
