A 2000 Barbaresco from Rabajà, one of the appellation's most important single vineyards, made by one of Nebbiolo's true masters and now a quarter-century past its vintage. We've long thought of Rabajà as the cru that gives Barbaresco its darkness, depth and structure, a site whose wines lean toward density more than perfume. Giacosa farms a tiny 0.6-hectare parcel in Rabajà, facing southwest on clay-calcareous soil. This is the white-label bottling, 100% Nebbiolo. Giacosa saved the red label for Riservas he declared only in exceptional years. Bruno Giacosa, who died in 2018, believed Nebbiolo needed no French barriques or modern tweaks. That conviction is why collectors still hunt down older bottles from this house. Save it for a Piedmontese dinner with people who'll appreciate what's in the glass.

Antonio Galloni

"My guess is that one day Giacosa's Barbaresco Rabajà will be viewed as the most successful of his 2000 Barbareschi. I loved the wine's structure and power. Endless layers of mineral and balsamic-infused fruit caressed the palate through to the finish. Wow!" —Antonio Galloni

Wine Spectator

"As seductive as it gets. Forget the slightly amber hue. Full-bodied, with fabulous, decadent, ripe plum, cedar and berry character, layers of velvety tannins and a long, long finish. Superb."

More about Bruno Giacosa

Bruno Giacosa passed away in 2018, but his legacy defines classical Barolo and Barbaresco. He was convinced that Nebbiolo doesn't need French barriques or modern tweaks—only time in large oak and genuine understanding of terroir. His golden palate earned him recognition as an 'icon of Piedmont' and a 'guardian of the traditional style,' and his wines are objects of desire for good reason. These are classical expressions of Nebbiolo made by someone who understood the grape's infinite complexity.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Brasato (beef braised in Nebbiolo), tajarin or risotto with shaved white truffle, agnolotti del plin in roast-meat sauce, roast pheasant, or a wedge of Castelmagno.

Tasting Profile

Expect traditional Nebbiolo, aged in large oak and showing the darker, denser side of Rabajà: sour cherry and dried violets alongside tar, leather, dried herbs and earthy, savoury notes. It is typically medium- to full-bodied, with lively acidity and firm, fine-grained tannins that soften with bottle age, finishing long, dry and savoury.
