A magnum of mature Giacosa Barolo from the great Falletto cru is a special-occasion bottle, and the larger format means it has aged even more slowly and gracefully than a standard bottle. Le Rocche del Falletto sits on a steep, southwest-facing amphitheater of calcareous clay in Serralunga d'Alba, ground Bruno Giacosa rated as the finest in the region for elegant, age-worthy Barolo. The wine spent 32 months in large French oak botti and years more in bottle. The 2003 was a famously hot, dry vintage, so this shows riper, more opulent fruit than a classic cool year, and at over two decades old it has mellowed into full maturity. This is ready to drink now. Decant carefully and pour for a crowd.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2003 Barolo Le Rocche del Falletto has quite a bit more breadth and volume than the straight Barolo Falletto, but at the same time the intense, forward personality of the year is more evident. The classic Giacosa perfume struggles to emerge, but the ripeness of the vintage remains very much in evidence. The tannins are a bit firm, but they will only intensify as the fruit fades, so the 2003 is best enjoyed before that sets in." —Antonio Galloni

"A little jammy on the nose, with lots of strawberry. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a long, chewy finish. Slightly one-dimensional now, but should develop wonderfully over time. Best after 2010."

More about Bruno Giacosa

Bruno Giacosa passed away in 2018, but his legacy defines classical Barolo and Barbaresco. He was convinced that Nebbiolo doesn't need French barriques or modern tweaks—only time in large oak and genuine understanding of terroir. His golden palate earned him recognition as an 'icon of Piedmont' and a 'guardian of the traditional style,' and his wines are objects of desire for good reason. These are classical expressions of Nebbiolo made by someone who understood the grape's infinite complexity.
