This is Bruno Giacosa's red label Barolo: the Riserva from Le Rocche, the plot Giacosa picked out as the very best part of his Falletto vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba. Giacosa kept the red label for the few bottlings he judged truly exceptional, so this is the house at its most serious. He bought all of Falletto from Luigi Brigante in 1980, which means the whole vineyard belongs to the estate. It covers 13 hectares of steep calcareous clay, shaped into its own amphitheater in the far southeastern corner of the Barolo zone, right on the border of the national park. The slope faces south to southwest, which sounds warm, but it's also one of the highest vineyards in Serralunga, rising to just over 400 metres. Giacosa considered it the best place for elegant, long-lived Barolo. Le Rocche is the historic heart of the site, at the top of its south-facing section, and Giacosa first bottled it on its own in 1997 (before that, its fruit went into his Falletto Barolo). Expect classy, classical Nebbiolo from a master of the grape, now nearly 25 years old and ready for a table that will appreciate it.

Antonio Galloni

98 points

"A big, dramatic wine, the 2001 Barolo Falletto di Serralunga d’Alba is utterly captivating. It is at once sensual and powerful, conveying all the complexity that only Nebbiolo is capable of. Deeply pitched balsamic and spice notes build as this dark, structured Serralunga Barolo shows off all its brooding intensity. Magnificent." —Antonio Galloni

Decanter

"Irony minerals, pressed violet and dark cocoa are at the fore with sweet moist earth and mace on the palate. It has filled out and shows more richness now, though somehow remains ethereally weighted. Deeply profound with endless layers and lingering porcini, it wields a steady grip and appetising sour cherry acidity. I have been lucky enough to try this on half a dozen occasions, from its initial release until I opened my last bottle a few months ago. Still very much alive and singing."

Wine Spectator

"This is a beautiful, seductive wine with power yet great finesse. It's full-bodied, with a massive silky mouthfeel and lovely raspberry and strawberry character. It's very, very long. All in harmony. Giacosa is a master."

More about Bruno Giacosa

Bruno Giacosa passed away in 2018, but his legacy defines classical Barolo and Barbaresco. He was convinced that Nebbiolo doesn't need French barriques or modern tweaks—only time in large oak and genuine understanding of terroir. His golden palate earned him recognition as an 'icon of Piedmont' and a 'guardian of the traditional style,' and his wines are objects of desire for good reason. These are classical expressions of Nebbiolo made by someone who understood the grape's infinite complexity.

From the Importer

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Beef braised in Barolo with polenta; tajarin with butter and shaved white truffle; roast pheasant or guinea fowl with porcini; aged Castelmagno or Parmigiano-Reggiano after the meal.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Serralunga Barolo profile: red cherry, violets and tar, with dried herbs, licorice and earthy notes that deepen into leather and truffle with bottle age. Typically full-bodied yet elegant, with firm, fine-grained tannins and bright acidity, finishing long and savoury. Think the perfume of top red Burgundy, with far more grip.
