Burlotto's classic Barolo is the way into Verduno's flagship traditional house, a producer that matters historically, makes delicious wine and is outstanding value. Instead of a single cru, the family blends four estate vineyards: south-facing Breri at about 240 metres, plus Neirane, Rocche Olmo and Boscatto up around 370 metres. Most of that higher ground sits on calcareous soils with an even mix of clay, sand and silt that hold water well. Commendatore Giovan Battista Burlotto founded the estate in 1850, and Fabio Alessandria has changed remarkably little: across the house, some of the crush is still done by foot, and fermentation happens in upright wooden vats with indigenous yeasts and little temperature control. The grapes are picked by hand. Across Barolo, 2019 brought a cool spring, a very hot summer broken by rain and cool nights in September and October. The vintage gave balanced wines with elegant tannins and good acidity, mostly ones for the cellar. The family calls this Barolo "sober, rigorous and dynamic," and recommends serving it at 16–18°C (60–65°F).

"The 2019 Barolo is a very pretty, elegant wine. In this vintage, the straight Barolo has (unusually) a touch of whole cluster influence that drives the aromatic profile, adding gorgeous floral and savory intensity this wine does not typically have. Burlotto's Barolo is far from an easygoing wine, it is a Barolo to cellar for a few years and drink for another decade or so beyond. This super-classic Barolo is an absolute gem." —Antonio Galloni

"The Comm. G.B. Burlotto 2019 Barolo sees fruit from a large vineyard site in the Breri MGA with southern exposures and slightly lower elevations. It borders Monvigliero but only reaches 250 meters in elevation. It also shares the blue marl soils that distinguish this area. The wine offers pretty fruit intensity with ruby fruit, bright cherry and cassis. This vintage takes a little longer to open, and although it doesn't share the complexity of its neighboring cru, this is a fine expression from Verduno." —Monica Larner

"It's true that to understand a producer one should taste the entry-level wine, and the talent of Fabio Alessandria does not lack in this blend. Its vermouth-like nose is full of aromatic herbs, bitter orange, wild strawberry and cinnamon. A graceful signature of the estate, it's supported by brilliant acidity and velvety tannins with a chalky yet polished finish. An enjoyable Barolo, not without potential for ageing."

"Burlotto’s 2019 Barolo, the firm’s classic bottling, is the perfect introduction to this iconic estate and outstanding vintage. A blend of Nebbiolo from different vineyards in the village of Verduno, it opens with heady scents of rose, woodland berry, cedar, dark spice and wild rosemary. Polished, focused and linear, it’s boasts supreme finesse, offering juicy red cherry, wild strawberry and star anise flavors framed in taut, refined tannins. It’s well balanced and fresh, with with bright acidity. Drink 2025–2034." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Burlotto

Burlotto is the flagship producer from Barolo’s Verduno area. This is a property of enormous historic importance, fabulously delicious wines, and outstanding value.

The Commendatore Giovan Battista Burlotto, one of Barolo's great characters, founded the estate back in 1850. The labels still commemorate the royal house of Savoy’s fondness for Burlotto wines, as well as the winery’s exclusive presence on Duke Luigi Amedeo's 1899 North Pole expedition. The Duke lost two fingers to frostbite, but wrote to the Commendatore a year and a half into the trip that “[t]he wine has been conserved in perfect condition.” G.B. Burlotto was also a pioneer of selling wine in bottle (rather than in cask or demijohn), as well as a champion of a now-rare but still-ravishing grape, Pelaverga Piccolo.

Four generations later, G.B.’s great-great-nephew, Fabio Alessandria, has changed little at the winery, doing some of the crush by foot, fermenting the wine in upright wooden vats, using indigenous yeast and little temperature control. We love these wines for their history, but even more for their diversity, their pure fruit, delicate structure, and signature Verduno floral aromatics and spicy palate.

The family's single-vineyard Barolos, especially the culty Monvigliero, are some of Piedmont's most lauded wines, critical and collector favorites year-in and year-out. But they continue to make extraordinary wines for Piedmont's more humble grapes (including Dolcetto, Barbera and of course, that Pelaverga), wines that don't attempt to turn those grapes into Nebbiolo blockbusters but rather that show their unique charms and terroir transparency. The sheer drinkability of these "lesser" wines is is tremendous, and the pricing for such special bottles from such top-rank grower, is shockingly accessible.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Beef braised in Barolo, agnolotti del plin in roast-meat sauce, tajarin with butter and white truffle, roast veal shank, or aged Castelmagno and Toma.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic, traditional Barolo profile: red cherry, dried flowers, tar and savoury herbs, with the perfumed, lifted edge Verduno is known for. It is typically medium-bodied but firmly built, with bright acidity and grippy Nebbiolo tannins that soften with age (think the perfume of a fine red Burgundy, with more grip). The finish is dry, savoury and long.
