Cantalupo's flagship single vineyard, a decade-plus on from the vintage and drinking in the mature window that Nebbiolo lovers rarely get to buy outright. Collis Breclemae is the stonier of the estate's two principal crus, and where Collis Carellae runs dark and brooding, Breclemae leans floral — violet and rose above the plum — helped along by three full years in cask before it ever sees a bottle. Alberto Arlunno began bottling this parcel on its own in 1979, and the family has been in Ghemme since the Renaissance, long enough to earn the benchmark status they have here. The vineyard is named for Breclema, a medieval village that held a strategic position just north of Ghemme until it was destroyed in the Middle Ages. The wider point is geological: Ghemme's clay, decomposed granite and quartz were dumped here by the retreating Monte Rosa glacier, and that jumble is why these Nebbiolos taste so pointedly of dirt and carry such racy structure.

Antonio Galloni

96 points

"The 2013 Ghemme Collis Breclamae is fabulous. Deep, dark and also translucent, the 2013 possesses magnificent clarity as well as structure. Black cherry, lavender, truffle, mint, spice and new leather all develop in an ample, resonant Ghemme that hits all the right notes. A rich, substantial finish rounds things out in style. The 2013 can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring, but it also has the pedigree to develop in the cellar for many years to come. Each time I come back to the 2013 it is more impressive." —Antonio Galloni

More about Cantalupo

Antichi Vigneti di Cantalupo produces Nebbiolo in Ghemme in northern Piedmont's Colline Novaresi region, where the variety is called Spanna. The Arlunno family manages 34 hectares, with 80% planted to Nebbiolo across prestigious crus like Gabutti and Margheria. Their Agamium—Latin for Ghemme—ages in traditional medium-sized new oak, producing wines of real structure and age-worthiness. This is single-vineyard Nebbiolo from the ancient home to the grape, made with respect for tradition and place.

From the Importer

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Braised veal shank with gremolata, mushroom risotto, agnolotti in butter and sage, roast guinea hen, or a plate of aged Toma and Castelmagno.

Tasting Profile

Violets and dried roses over dark plum, with the earthy, savory edge that comes with age on Nebbiolo. Medium-bodied and firmly structured: bright acidity and fine tannins that have softened without going away, finishing long, dusty and mineral.
