What is this wine?
Founded in 1998 by Gerardo Giuratrabocchetti, Cantine del Notaio is one of the leading names in Basilicata, dedicated to the noble Aglianico del Vulture. Their vineyards lie on the volcanic slopes of Monte Vulture, whose mineral-rich soils and high elevations give the grape both power and finesse. La Firma (“The Signature”) is the estate’s flagship Aglianico, crafted from carefully selected fruit and aged extensively in oak and bottle before release.

Why get this wine?
Often dubbed the “Barolo of the South,” Aglianico reaches its pinnacle in Basilicata. La Firma is among the finest examples—structured, complex, and ageworthy, yet still attractively priced compared to top Piedmont and Tuscan reds. The 2016 vintage, one of the great recent years, brings balance, concentration, and long-lived elegance, making this a serious collectible.

What does this wine taste like?
Full-bodied and layered, with ripe black cherry, plum, and blackberry framed by tobacco, leather, cocoa, and savory spice. Firm tannins and vibrant acidity provide structure, while volcanic minerality gives lift and persistence.

When should you drink this wine?
Already impressive with a long decant, but best cellared for 10–20 years. Ideal with braised meats, game, or aged cheeses—dishes that match its power and depth.
