When people talk Mediterranean wine it's usually Sicily this, Corsica that, and Sardinia gets skipped. That's a mistake, and Cardedu is our favorite way to fix it. The Loi family works the wild, mountainous southeast of the island, where the sea is never far away and the roads are never particularly safe, and they farm organically. Nuo is their Vermentino, and it does exactly what a great island white should: citrus and green herbs up front, a bitter-almond snap in the middle, and a saline, savory finish instead of sweetness or oak. It's a beach wine with something to say. Chill it hard and put it next to anything that came out of the water.

Sergio Loi, the fourth-generation owner of Cardedu, works 42 hectares on Sardinia's sparsely populated southeast, where granite soils near the coast and schist in the cliffs impart real minerality. The grapes are hand-harvested from crumbling granite rich in quartz—giving the soils a distinctive reddish tint—and fermented with natural yeasts. No chemicals in the vineyard, minimum intervention in the cellar. These are wines that taste like Sardinia's wild landscape: mineral, complex, utterly honest. A treasure trove of terrific wines perfect for any season.
