The second wine of Château Lafite-Rothschild, from a First Growth of the 1855 classification — and now with fifteen years in bottle behind it. Carruades takes its name from a plateau of parcels the estate bought in 1845, and it's drawn from younger vines and from lots not selected for the grand vin, with a higher share of Merlot that has always made it the more approachable of the two wines. That approachability is the point here: a mature Pauillac from the Lafite cellars that you can actually open now rather than file away for another decade, while still delivering the house signature of graphite, cedar and aromatic lift. Lafite's 264 acres sit on fine gravel mixed with aeolian sand across three distinct sections — the hilly ground by the château, the Carruades plateau itself, and a plot in Saint-Estèphe granted special permission to be sold as Pauillac. Decant it.

Antonio Galloni

89 points

"The 2010 Carruades de Lafite has a generous bouquet with “playful” red berry fruit, liquorice and cassis. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins, plush and rounded in texture. It just comes across a little blocky on the finish when I am seeking more tension and delineation. This bottle questions the longevity of this Second label. Tasted from an ex-château bottle at the BI Wines & Spirits 10-Year On tasting." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

92 points

"Deep garnet colored, the 2010 Carruades de Lafite charges out of the gate with bold scents of baked plums and boysenberries followed by hints of menthol, tobacco leaf, cloves and smoked meats. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers a well-poised frame of ripe, grainy tannins and seamless freshness supporting the savory flavors, finishing with a spicy kick." —Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Jancis Robinson

"Tasted blind. Bricky garnet. Slightly odd nose – hard to describe, is it this bottle? – and dry and pinched/tart on the palate. Not worth the price, certainly not compared with, for example, Grand Puy Lacoste."

Wine Spectator

93 points

"Solid, with bright cassis, fig and blackberry fruit studded with tobacco leaf, anise and violet. The long finish has a tarry thread, but stays polished and refined overall, with a whiff of sandalwood lingering gently."

Wine Enthusiast

"A dense and very tannic second wine from Lafite-Rothschild. Ripe fruits from juicy Merlot balance its power and give sweetness. It's a rich, fine wine, with the tannins of the vintage never too prominent." —Roger Voss

More about Carruades de Lafite Rothschild

Carruades de Lafite is the second wine of Château Lafite-Rothschild, First Growth of the 1855 Bordeaux classification. Named after a plateau of parcels purchased in 1845, the wine carries proportions of Merlot that give it more immediate approachability than the grand vin. Black cherry, cassis, graphite, cedar, spice, silky tannins—this is refined Bordeaux winemaking at an accessible price point. Lafite's second wine is a chance to taste the house's meticulous approach without the legendary markup.
