Cesanese is Lazio's great red grape and almost nobody outside Rome knows it — a late-ripening, low-yielding variety from the hill country around Affile and Piglio, in the province of Frosinone, whose small, sparse clusters give a wine built for the long haul. Casale del Giglio made its name in the 1990s with Chardonnay, Syrah and Petit Verdot on the red clay and alluvial soils south of Rome, but Antonio Santarelli — who joined his father Dino in the family business at twenty-five, having previously known the estate mainly as somewhere to ride his motorbike — has spent recent years bringing Lazio's own varieties back into the range, Cesanese among them. The vines sit on relatively high hilly slopes, and harvest waits until late October, and the house treats the fruit seriously: spontaneous fermentation under a submerged cap at 18-20°C for roughly twenty days, then another ten to twelve days on the skins, because Cesanese skins and seeds are unusually rich in tannin. The estate is certified organic, and its wines are all over Rome's restaurant lists for good reason — this is the kind of bottle that overdelivers quietly while everyone else is arguing about Tuscany. A genuinely useful introduction to a grape that deserves far more attention than it gets.

Tasting Profile

Deep ruby. Marasca cherry on the nose, then white and black pepper and a floral lift of violet. The peppery note carries through.
