This is Nebbiolo from Monforte d'Alba, in the heart of Barolo country, made by two people who ran Vietti for more than 35 years. It's bottled as Langhe Nebbiolo, so you get the perfume without the long wait. Luca Currado and Elena Penna left Vietti in January 2023 and started this deliberately small family venture with their children, Michele and Giulia. They farm every one of their sites organically. Bricco Lago comes from their younger vines (up to 25 years old) in San Sebastiano, on clay and limestone that runs down from the church of San Sebastiano toward the only natural lake in the Langhe. The older vines go into their Nebbiolo d'Alba San Sebastiano. In this part of Monforte, altitude and cool air currents push the harvest late. The couple also ferments whole berries rather than whole clusters, specifically to avoid too much power. The result is the kind of Nebbiolo you open on a weeknight while your Barolos rest in the cellar.

More about Cascina Penna Currado

Cascina Penna-Currado is the new project of Luca Currado Vietti and Elena Penna, for decades the faces of Piedmont powerhouse Vietti. The family sold Vietti to American businessman Kyle Krause in 2016, and the couple stayed on until January 2023. Now based at Cascina Lazzarito, a 16th-century farmhouse atop the Lazzarito cru in Serralunga, they work about 20 hectares, mostly leased: Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto in Monforte, Barolo parcels, and Timorasso from the Colli Tortonesi. Their children Michele and Giulia are already involved.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Tajarin with butter and sage, porcini risotto, vitello tonnato, roast chicken with rosemary, braised rabbit, or agnolotti del plin.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Langhe Nebbiolo profile: red cherry, raspberry and a violet-tinged floral perfume, with hints of dried herbs and tar. Typically medium-bodied, with bright acidity from this cool, late-harvested corner of Monforte and firm but approachable tannins, finishing dry and savoury. Think of a more open-knit Barolo that's ready to drink young.
