Castello di Luzzano sits on a hilltop straddling Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna, with winemaking documented in a parchment from 1000 A.D. The Fugazza family took ownership in the early 20th century; today sisters Maria Giulia and Giovannella run the 110-hectare estate. In Oltrepo Pavese, "Bonarda" refers to the Croatina grape, documented locally since 1192—sometimes called "Italian Syrah" for its spicy character. The Carlino is their flagship expression: deep ruby with intense dark fruit, spice, and floral undertones. Croatina was traditionally made slightly sparkling, though modern techniques reveal surprising roundness and longevity when handled carefully. Excellent with rich pasta dishes or grilled sausages.
