Castello di Volpaia, perched high in the hills of Radda in Chianti, is known for producing some of the most elegant and terroir-driven wines in the region. Their 2022 Chianti Classico is a pure expression of organically farmed Sangiovese, capturing the finesse and vibrancy that define this cooler, high-altitude subzone. The vintage, marked by warm days and cool nights, allowed for full ripeness while preserving the bright acidity that makes great Chianti so food-friendly.

Volpaia is a whole hilltop village turned wine estate: a fortified medieval hamlet above Radda in Chianti, first mentioned in a document from 1172, where the winery and cellars sit among the old stone houses, and some of the highest vineyards in Chianti Classico produce Sangiovese of unusual perfume and finesse.

Raffaello Stianti bought the estate in 1966, with the first vintage in 1968, and in 1972 gave it to his daughter Giovannella and her husband, Carlo Mascheroni, as a wedding gift. They restored the village, of which the family now owns about two-thirds, and the next generation, including their daughter Federica, has joined them. The vineyards sit high above Radda, on the loose sandstone the locals call macigno, which lets the roots dig deep, and the grapes have long been farmed organically.

The range runs from a bright, lithe Chianti Classico and Riserva to the single-vineyard Gran Selezione wines Coltassala and Il Puro, plus the Sangiovese-Cabernet blend Balifico and Vin Santo. The family also makes olive oil. Across the board the wines show what Radda does best: altitude freshness, red fruit, floral lift and firm, fine structure. Volpaia was making serious estate wine in Radda long before the commune was fashionable.
