1970 was the standout Port declaration of its decade, and fifty-six years on these wines sit on a long, generous plateau. Quinta do Cachao is a single estate on the bank of the Douro at Ferradosa, in the Cima Corgo, first planted in 1845 by the Barao do Seixo and bought by Caves Messias in 1956; roughly half of its 200 hectares are under vine, on schist, and the vineyard carries the Douro's top A classification. The plantings are the classic Douro set: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cao and Tinta Barroca. The 1970 growing season dried out from March and stayed close to ideal until a late-September harvest, giving Ports with deep color and real body. Expect serious sediment after this long: stand the bottle upright for a day or two, then decant carefully off the crust. Serve at cool room temperature, around 60-65F, and finish it within a few days of opening.
