Chartogne-Taillet, Champagne Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut Chemin de Reims, 2019

Use code 10OFF to get 10% off 12+ bottles

Single-parcel grower Champagne from one of the most respected addresses in Merfy. Chemin de Reims is a 100% Chardonnay block planted in 1981 just outside the village, on iron-rich Thanetian sand over deep chalk — a soil signature that gives Chartogne-Taillet's Blanc de Blancs a fuller, more structured profile than the appellation norm. Alexandre Chartogne (who took over from his father Philippe and pioneered the house's single-parcel program) vinifies this in 350-600L oak with regular top-ups to preserve the parcel's character. The vintage 2019 reads tight and serious: tangerine, yellow grapefruit, linden, chalk and a quiet exotic edge of mango on the finish. A Champagne for collectors of terroir, not labels.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2019 Extra-Brut Chemin de Reims is a bundle of focus and tension. I would prefer to cellar it for a few years, as it is quite tense. Chalk, crushed rocks, salt, white pepper, and mint all race across the palate. This chiseled Blanc de Blancs is terrific, a wine of tremendous substance and palate presence. This serious, contemplative Champagne is lights-out. Dosage is 4.5 grams per liter." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"Chartogne-Taillet’s 2019 Blanc de Blancs Chemin de Reims, disgorged in May 2024 with a dosage of four grams per liter, is showing magnificently. It unfurls from the glass with an expressive bouquet of nashi pear, orange zest and beeswax, mingling with white flowers and anise. The fruit is sourced from a south-facing, single-vineyard parcel planted between 1986 and 2005, distinguished by its sandy, iron-rich soils. Vinification takes place in 228-liter barrels—primarily from Taransaud and Seguin Moreau—most of which are two to three years old, with 10% new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium- to full-bodied and strikingly multifaceted—brimming with concentration yet retaining remarkable tension. A pristine core of fruit is complemented by ripe but vibrant acidity and a long, chalk-inflected finish. Both the 2019 and 2020 renditions are exceptional, but the 2019 arguably delivers even greater depth and nuance today." —Kristaps Karklins

More about Chartogne-Taillet

After a stage with Antoine Selosse, Alexandre Chartogne returned to the family estate and turned it upside down. He spent years experimenting and tinkering with every aspect of Champagne making from vine management to vessels. He's landed back where he says his ancestors started: in the vineyards, growing perfect fruit and aging in neutral oak.

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Made for the table, not just an apero. Lobster with drawn butter, scallop crudo, roast chicken with lemon and tarragon, or a wedge of aged Comte. Also striking alongside sushi or a salt-crusted bream.

Tasting Profile

Bone-dry Extra Brut, medium-bodied, finely structured. Tangerine, yellow grapefruit, linden and chalk first; a quiet exotic note of mango opens with air. Long, mineral, gently iron-tinged finish. Drinking now; will reward five-plus years.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
