A single-parcel grower Champagne that reads like a white Burgundy with bubbles. Les Heurtebises is a 1.07-hectare Chardonnay site south-southwest of Merfy, planted in the early 1980s on a windy, south-facing plateau — sandy clay over a sandstone subsoil, a terroir found almost nowhere else in Champagne. Alexandre Chartogne first vinified it as a single parcel in 2007 and has steadily made it one of the house's defining wines. The 2019 shows fresh quince, lemon curd, smoked almond, honeycomb and a quiet dough-and-spice register, with a refined mineral edge and the slightly broader, more textural feel the sandstone imprints. One of the most distinctive Blanc de Blancs in Champagne.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2019 Extra-Brut Heurtebise is a rich, sumptuous wine. Lifted floral notes are a reminder this parcel is planted on sand, but the wine's textural richness and overall presence are also notable. Citrus confit, white flowers, tangerine peel and spice build effortlessly through to the creamy, resonant finish. Sumptuous and alluring, the 2019 is extremely easy to like and drink, even in the early going. Dosage is 2.4 grams per liter." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

96 points

"The 2019 Blanc de Blancs Heurtebise is a single-vineyard expression that spotlights the singular terroir of Merfy, rooted in sandy soils with components of silt and clay, resting atop sandstone. Produced from Chardonnay vines planted between 1980 and 1985, it is aged entirely in 228-liter barrels—predominantly from Cavin—with a modest proportion of new oak. Disgorged in April 2024 with a dosage of 2.4 grams per liter, it reveals a bouquet of white blossoms, lemon zest and freshly baked brioche. The palate is medium-bodied, incisive and poised, with laser-like acidity that carries a core of pristine fruit to a long, mineral finish. It is the most linear and tensile wine in the range, even more so than the Chemin de Reims from the same vintage." —Kristaps Karklins

More about Chartogne-Taillet

After a stage with Antoine Selosse, Alexandre Chartogne returned to the family estate and turned it upside down. He spent years experimenting and tinkering with every aspect of Champagne making from vine management to vessels. He's landed back where he says his ancestors started: in the vineyards, growing perfect fruit and aging in neutral oak.

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Built for richer table moments: roast chicken with morels, butter-poached lobster, miso-glazed cod, or aged Comte and Beaufort. The sandstone gives it the body to handle white meats and brown-butter sauces with ease.

Tasting Profile

Bone-dry Extra Brut, medium- to full-bodied, textural. Fresh quince, lemon curd, smoked almond, honeycomb, dough and a touch of cardamom. The mineral grip is sandstone-driven — broader and more savory than the chalk Blanc de Blancs.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
