Thirty years on, a Fourth Growth Saint-Julien is exactly the kind of bottle most of us never manage to cellar ourselves, and this one has done its waiting already. The château describes the 1995 as having a fruity, very elegant nose and a supple attack with delicious tannins. That's Saint-Julien playing to its strengths, polish over brawn. At the heart of Beychevelle's vineyard lie two plateaus of deep Garonne gravel laid down in the Pleistocene, a lean, well-drained mix of pebbles and sand. The Gironde estuary, visible from the château's front steps, evens out temperature extremes so the grapes ripen slowly. Only 90 of the estate's 250 hectares are under vine. The rest is pine, ash, poplar and walnut woods, plus pasture grazed by Limousin cattle. It deserves a proper dinner and an unhurried evening.

Antonio Galloni

"The 1995 Beychevelle has never been one of my favorite vintages, inferior to the 2005 or 2015 that I juxtaposed at the table. Dark berry fruit, quite ferrous, is evidence of a little Brettanomyces. The palate is powerful and muscular, which is not really the Beychevelle style, and quite spicy towards the finish. Will it improve with time? I doubt it." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

85 points

"This wine performed better from cask. Out of bottle, it displays a medium ruby color, and a distinctive nose of underbrush, damp earth, and loamy-tinged black currant fruit. Moderately tannic, with medium body and some angularity, this wine possesses good extract, but not much soul or character." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Wine Spectator

"Well-crafted red. Vivid blackberry and violet aromas and flavors. Full-bodied and very silky, with lovely tannins and a medium aftertaste of fruit and toasted oak. Best after 2000."
