Aged Bordeaux from a classed growth, without the classed-growth tariff. Cantemerle is a Fifth Growth of the 1855 Classification whose vines sit just the other side of the Margaux border, on the same gravelly Haut-Médoc soils but without the cachet or the price — which is exactly why it stays perennially undervalued. The 98 hectares of siliceous gravel around the château were laid down by the Garonne grinding away at the Pyrenees; poor in nutrients, they force the vine to root deep, and the stones throw back sunlight by day and stored heat through the night. The house style is a holdout: most of the grand vin still goes into concrete vats, there's no malolactic in barrique, no fashionable wall of new oak, and no trimming back of Cabernet Sauvignon in favor of something softer. This is a Cabernet-led blend rounded out with Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, and it's now well into mature territory. Stand the bottle upright for a day and decant gently off the sediment.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast leg of lamb with rosemary, steak frites, duck breast with cherries, or a beef and mushroom pie. Also good with aged Comté or a mild washed-rind cheese.

Tasting Profile

Cabernet-led claret: blackcurrant and dark cherry with cedar, pencil shavings and sweet tobacco, and the forest-floor earthiness that comes with bottle age. Medium to full-bodied, tannins softened and fine-grained, acidity still fresh. Long, savory, gently tart finish.
