The 2005 vintage in Bordeaux is legendary—ripe, powerful, and perfectly balanced—and Château Cantenac Brown made one of its finest wines of the modern era. A Third Growth estate with deep gravel soils and a traditional winemaking style, Cantenac Brown’s 2005 Margaux is now entering a glorious phase of maturity, where richness and refinement meet in perfect harmony.

Expect layers of blackcurrant, plum, and blackberry compote, interwoven with cedar, pencil shavings, violets, and leather. The tannins are still present but velvety, giving structure without weight, and the finish lingers with earthy spice and that lifted floral note Margaux is known for. Decant for an hour and enjoy with roast lamb or mushroom risotto, or hold for another 5–10 years if you’re patient—this wine has all the bones to keep evolving beautifully. A benchmark vintage from a classic estate.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

"The 2005 Cantenac Brown offers an intriguing combination of plush fruit and intense tannins. Ripe red cherry fruit, cedar, spice, tobacco, menthol, cedar, and rose petals all meld together in this decidedly luscious bold Margaux. Soft curves and silky tannins make 2005 a total pleasure to drink today, but it has more than enough freshness to develop well in the bottle for another decade plus. This sumptuous Margaux is an absolute beauty." -Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"Although the new owners were responsible for finishing this wine, serious Bordeaux lovers will have to wait for the 2006 to fully experience their uncompromising efforts. The dark, ruggedly built, rustic, angular 2005 exhibits an impressively saturated color along with aromas of charcoal smoke and black fruits. Aggressive, astringent tannins and noticeable acidity are found in this charmless, full-throttle, monolithic Margaux. It will require serious cellaring, but I do not believe the tannins and high acids will ever be fully resolved." -Robert Parker

Wine Spectator

"Shows blackberry, treacle tart and licorice aromas. Full-bodied, with wonderful vanilla, berry and milk chocolate character, followed by a long finish. Needs time to develop."
