Thirty years on, this is a Pomerol at full maturity — the kind of bottle you open with a meal and a couple of patient friends. Domaine de l'Église is one of the oldest estates in Pomerol (dating to 1589) and sits in the literal shadow of the village church. The Castéja family acquired it in the early 1970s and the wine is still distributed by their négociant house, Borie-Manoux. The vineyard is Merlot-dominant (with a small splash of Cabernet Franc) on Pomerol's signature clay-and-gravel. 1995 was a strong Right Bank vintage with structure to age — and three decades in, this is now drinking at peak, with the tertiary complexity that only mature Bordeaux can deliver.

91 points

"This wine has wonderful finesse and fruit. Lovely chocolate and raspberry aromas. Full-bodied, with beautiful silky tannins and lots of berry and milk chocolate on the aftertaste. Best after 2000."

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

A wine for the table: roast duck, rare leg of lamb, beef tenderloin with truffles, roast squab, or aged hard cheeses. Truffle and wild mushroom dishes will pull out the tertiary notes.

Tasting Profile

Tertiary aromas of forest floor, leather, dried plum, tobacco leaf, and cedar laced with violet. Medium-bodied and silky — the tannins fully resolved, the fruit gentled to compote, the finish long, savory, and softly earthy. Pomerol at peak.
