Cos d'Estournel, the pagoda-crowned landmark of Saint-Estephe and a Second Growth in the 1855 classification, makes one of the Medoc's most distinctive wines, marrying the commune's firm structure with a generous dose of Merlot. The 2004 is a classic, cool-vintage Bordeaux: more restrained and aromatic than the powerhouse years, with bright acidity and elegance rather than sheer size. That makes it a smart choice for the table right now, since it is fully mature and food-friendly without demanding a special occasion. Cabernet Sauvignon leads the blend, filled out with Merlot.
