D'Armailhac's calling card is Cabernet Franc — historically one of the Medoc's largest plantings of it, from old massal-selection vines — layered into a Cabernet Sauvignon-led Pauillac. That is what gives this estate its particular bearing: elegant and classical rather than brawny, in an appellation that mostly aims for power. The vines run across four gravel banks over more than eighty hectares next door to Mouton Rothschild, and the property has been in Rothschild hands since 1933, farmed alongside Mouton and Clerc Milon. 2019 was a hot, dry summer saved by cool nights and well-timed September rain, and it produced Left Bank wines with ripe fruit, real depth, and acidity that keeps them from feeling heavy. This is still young: decant it for a couple of hours, or put it away for five years and let the tannins knit.

Antonio Galloni

91 points

"The 2019 d'Armailhac is impeccable, just as it was from barrel. Sweet red cherry, blood orange, mint and cinnamon all run through the 2019, but it is brightness and energy I admire most. The purity of the fruit is compelling, as is the wine's balance. The 2019 was the last vintage made in the old facility. It will be fascinating to see where the Mouton takes d'Armailhac from here." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

93 points

"More classically proportioned than the exuberant 2018, the 2019 D'Armailhac wafts from the glass with aromas of violets, blackberries and cassis complemented by subtle hints of licorice, sweet soil tones and warm spices. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and perfumed, it's fleshy and enveloping, with an ample core of succulent fruit and beautifully polished, powdery tannins." —William Kelley

Decanter

94 points

"Wonderful florality on the nose, perfumed and full of black cherries. Great freshness here, such good juice content, immediately so alive and fresh, there is a real buzz to this wine with some creamy/chalky edges that are so refreshing. Great personality with vibrant fruit. Rich and layered, super concentrated but with this fun lively aspect. Tannins are chewy and ripe because of the weather but there's a great lift and sense of life to this. I really like it."

Wine Spectator

94 points

"Features a racy, chalky minerality that runs amid a core of steeped plum and black currant fruit, with lively cedar, black tea and savory nuance all around. Sneaky long too, thanks to its mineral thread."

Wine Enthusiast

92 points

"Full of ripe black fruits, the wine has great structure and depth. Its density is palpable with richness and tannins showing strongly. The juicy finish lifts everything." —Roger Voss

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Rib of beef, roast lamb with rosemary, venison, or duck with black cherries. Aged Comté or a firm sheep's-milk cheese also works.

Tasting Profile

Cassis and dark plum with cedar, tobacco leaf and graphite, plus a floral note from the Cabernet Franc. Full-bodied and structured, with firm, fine tannins and fresh acidity. Long, savory finish; it needs air or time.
