Chenin vines over 35 years old on sandstone and schist, certified organic, fermented on native yeast and kept away from oak: this is the easiest way into an Anjou estate that is quietly on the rise. The fruit comes from Bonnezeaux and Thouarcé rather than the estate's home hill of Chaume, and it carries the plain Vin de France label. Ten months in stainless steel keeps the focus on the old vines and the stony soils, not on wood. The person behind it is Vanessa Cherruau, who studied wine in Angers and spent 12 years in the wine trade. When the Rochais family, owners since 1960, were planning to sell to the local cooperative, she talked them into selling to her instead. Since her first vintage in 2019 she has done a lot to raise the profile of dry Chenin from the Chaume hill. (For the record, Plaisance is more farmhouse than château.)
