Five generations of Vatans have farmed the Loire—with records tracing the family back to 1714 as vignerons in Sancerre—and today Philippe and daughter Agathe tend their Dampierre-sur-Loire vineyards organically, coaxing Chenin Blanc from deep clay over tuffeau limestone. Argile—French for clay—names the wine for its defining terroir: four parcels of thirty-year-old vines on the same chalky bedrock that built the Loire's castles. Hand-harvested in baskets, pressed and fermented with indigenous yeasts, the wine rests in a combination of tank and large wood. The 2024 was one of the Loire's most challenging vintages in memory—frost, hail, record rainfall, and downy mildew forced lower yields and later harvest. But the resulting wine shines with fresh acidity and balanced aromatics. Saumur Chenin Blanc at its most honest.

More about Chateau du Hureau

Philippe Vatan and daughter Agathe run a fifth-generation estate tucked into the tufa limestone that borders the Loire Valley near Saumur. The Cabernet Francs are planted directly into that chalky tufa and taste like it—dark and mineral, alive with acidity, impossible to confuse with anything else. The whites are equally sharp and elegant. This is terroir speaking without softening.
