What is this wine?
Château Fonréaud is one of the leading estates of Listrac-Médoc, a Left Bank appellation between Moulis and Saint-Julien. The château dates back to the 17th century and is now run by the Chanfreau family. The vineyard sits on the Médoc’s highest plateau, with gravel and limestone soils ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, supported by Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The 2005 vintage is one of the greatest Bordeaux years of modern times, producing deeply structured yet balanced wines with exceptional longevity.

Why get this wine?
Well-stored 2005 Bordeaux is a treasure: mature, complex, and still full of life. Fonréaud offers the pedigree of a classified-quality Médoc without the lofty prices of the more famous communes. This is a rare opportunity to drink an aged Bordeaux at its peak, from one of the region’s best vintages in decades.

What does this wine taste like?
Medium to full-bodied, with softened tannins and layers of blackcurrant, plum, and blackberry. Secondary notes of cedar, leather, tobacco, and graphite are now fully integrated, showing classic mature Médoc character with Margaux-like elegance.

When should you drink this wine?
Perfect for drinking now through 2030. Decant gently to remove sediment and enjoy with roast lamb, ribeye steak, or mushroom dishes.

Robert Parker

84 points

"Dark plum/garnet to the rim, with plenty of tannin, earth and spice, this wine is still somewhat angular and austere but displays good fruit and the upside potential for another 5-7 years, although I don’t know if enough tannin will resolve itself to reach complete harmony." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Wine Enthusiast

91 points

"Rich, full and dense, this shows considerable elegance as well as power. The fruits are black, with a strong edge of acidity, but also concentrated. There is a smooth layer of wood that adds to the complexity as well as opening the wine." —Roger Voss
