From the limestone plateau above Saint-Émilion, Château Fonroque is a beacon of organic and biodynamic viticulture with a philosophy of restraint. The 2020 blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc comes from 35-year-old vines and is fermented with native yeasts in concrete before aging in oak (30% new) to preserve vintage freshness. The result is dark and expansive, with gravel, incense, tobacco, and dried herbs layering over black cherry and plum. A serious, nuanced expression of Right Bank elegance.

Robert Parker

"Aromas of dusty berries, cherries, warm spices and petals introduce the 2020 Fonroque, a medium to full-bodied, supple and fleshy wine with a vibrant core of fruit, powdery tannins and a penetrating finish. As readers may remember, part of Fonroque's biodynamically farmed holdings are located on Saint-Émilion's limestone plateau, and the rest on the slopes, with more clay and colluvium." —William Kelley

"Full bottle 1,325 g. Cask sample taken 7 April. Certified organic.Medium-intensity purple. Quite a distinctive nose of vegetation and herbs rather than brow-beating sweet fruit – attractive. Then on the palate there's some richness but this seems to have more elements at play than many of its peers. More transparent and expressive. Finishes decidedly dry but not drying. 14%"

Decanter

"Subdued aromatics, this is attractive with raspberry flavours rippling through it and an appealing density, more old school and restrained than some, with classic balance. As it opens up, floral raspberry leaf appears in the best way, juicy and unfussy with crushed herbs and baked earth. Enjoyable, definitely not trying too hard and succeeding to charm. Certified biodynamic, Alain Moueix."

Wine Spectator

91 points

"Youthfully juicy and compact, with a bramble note wrapped around a core of black currant and fig preserves. The finish is coated with tobacco and tar accents, giving the distinct feel of a warm vintage wine. Merlot and Cabernet Franc."
