2020 was a hot one at Giscours, with heat waves from late June to mid-September, and the team's answer was to cut the vines back. In July they lowered the canopy to reduce evapotranspiration and hold on to the water the vines had stored over a rainy winter. The estate says the gamble paid off. By their account the result is a voluptuous, generous Third Growth Margaux with a taffeta-like texture and silky tannins. It continues in the same direction as 2019, aiming for aromatic brilliance and fine tannins. That fits the house's wider change of approach: they now extract less, and they run the maceration more like an infusion than a hard push. Under all of it are Giscours' three gravel hilltops, made of Garonne stones carried down from the Pyrenees, which drain off excess water and suit Cabernet Sauvignon. If you like your classified Bordeaux on the generous side rather than the austere, this is a year worth tracking down.

Antonio Galloni

96 points

"The 2020 Giscours is every bit as compelling as it was from barrel. Succulent dark cherry, plum, new leather, licorice, menthol and mocha fill out the layers nicely. There's a good bit of Merlot in this year, which lends quite a bit of mid-palate juiciness and textural depth, but there is also plenty of supporting structure underneath. The 2020 is both flamboyant and serious, a pretty appealing combination, I have to say." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

95 points

"This estate is now enjoying its finest run since its glory days in the 1970s, and the 2020 Giscours is excellent. Unwinding in the glass with deep aromas of blackberries, cassis, pencil shavings, rose petals and sweet, loamy soil, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with a layered and seamless mid-palate, excellent concentration and powdery structuring tannins." —William Kelley

Jancis Robinson

17 points

"Deep crimson. Dark-fruited and spicy on the nose, aromas of oak but not overly sweet-smelling. Very dark and quite oaky on the palate and yet it is really refined, the finest tannin texture that leaves the mouth fresh and clean. Firm, dry, elegant finish."

Decanter

92 points

"Bramble and medicinal herbal notes on the nose, quite perfumed too. High-toned, vibrant acidity straight away, mouthwatering with a real minerality - a chalkiness to the tannins. The fresh cherry, strawberry and raspberry fruit is bright and sharp countered by a strong menthol and liquorice taste that gives an aerated and lively feel. It’s concentrated but still quite taught and does close towards the finish, becoming quite narrow. It will provided delightful easy drinking though, just a little overtly spiced on the finish right now, give it a few years."

Wine Spectator

92 points

"Ripe but fresh and sleek in feel, with black cherry and blackberry puree notes gliding through, infused with sandalwood, bay leaf and black tea accents. This has a pleasant dark earth tint to the finish, though the fruit still holds sway. Nicely done. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot."

Wine Enthusiast

98 points

"Perfumed, ripe and juicy, this structured wine is already impressive. Its layered texture and black plum fruits have serious potential, packed with fruit and tannins with a generous aftertaste." —Roger Voss

Perfect Pairings

Herb-crusted rack of lamb, a rib of beef with roasted potatoes, or duck breast with a cherry sauce. For cheese, try aged Comté or an aged Cheddar.

Tasting Profile

A dry red blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The estate describes the 2020 as voluptuous and generous, with a taffeta-like texture and silky tannins. Expect a fuller, rounder style of Margaux: at Giscours the Merlot brings roundness, and the Cabernet brings structure, freshness and density.
