2020 was a hot one at Giscours, with heat waves from late June to mid-September, and the team's answer was to cut the vines back. In July they lowered the canopy to reduce evapotranspiration and hold on to the water the vines had stored over a rainy winter. The estate says the gamble paid off. By their account the result is a voluptuous, generous Third Growth Margaux with a taffeta-like texture and silky tannins. It continues in the same direction as 2019, aiming for aromatic brilliance and fine tannins. That fits the house's wider change of approach: they now extract less, and they run the maceration more like an infusion than a hard push. Under all of it are Giscours' three gravel hilltops, made of Garonne stones carried down from the Pyrenees, which drain off excess water and suit Cabernet Sauvignon. If you like your classified Bordeaux on the generous side rather than the austere, this is a year worth tracking down.
