This small, family-held Pomerol comes from the ground where the Moze-Berthon story began. Château Gouprie was the family's first property, and it has been theirs since 1820. It's a small place: 4.57 hectares of vines at the lieu-dit Maillet, planted to 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc. The vines grow in gravel and sand over a clay-limestone subsoil laced with crasse de fer, an iron-rich hardpan. The name comes from the Comte de Gouprie, whose château once stood here, and the family's Bordeaux-style house is built on its remains. Patrick Moze-Berthon now runs the properties with his eldest son Mickael, the seventh generation, and they describe their approach plainly: pick out the best bunches, harvest carefully and tailor the aging to the wine. This isn't a trophy label. It's Pomerol from a family who have worked the same ground for two centuries, and that's a rare thing of its own.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Pomerol profile from a Merlot-led blend: plum, black cherry and blackberry fruit, with Cabernet Franc adding a lift of violet and a fresh, slightly leafy edge. Typically medium- to full-bodied, with a plush, rounded texture, ripe and supple tannins and enough acidity to keep it fresh. It finishes dry, with a savoury, earthy note.
