A Grand Cru Classé that still overdelivers for the classification. Grand Mayne's 17 hectares sit on a gentle southwest-facing slope of clay and limestone that runs down to a foot of clay and ancient sand over clay subsoil, with vines averaging around 35 years old. The 2016 is 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, raised eighteen months in barrel, 65% of it new — a serious, traditional Right Bank élevage. The Nony family have owned the place since 1934, when Bordeaux merchant Jean Nony bought it from Noël Berbudeau, and the fourth generation runs it today, with Jean-Antoine Nony at the helm. The name is literal, by the way: "Mayne" means manor — a quality house with a big parcel of land attached.

Tasting Profile

Dry red. Merlot-led, so expect dark plum and black cherry fruit with the savory, earthy edge clay-limestone Saint-Émilion tends to give, plus cedar and baking spice from the new oak. Full-bodied, with firm fine-grained tannins and enough acidity to keep it fresh. Long finish.
