This is a chance to open a 1989 from a classified Pauillac estate with a bold choice of address. Its winery was built in 1820 facing the Gironde estuary, a daring decision at the time. The vineyard covers 40 hectares spread over 11 different soil types, and the house calls it the most representative cross-section of Pauillac you'll find. The story goes back to 1675, when Arnaud Ducasse bought a "modest" house on the riverbank, and his family held the estate for nearly three centuries. In 1855 it was ranked a Fifth Growth under a name nobody uses any more: Artigues-Arnaud. If you're curious what a classified Pauillac from 1989 has become and don't want to pay for the famous names next door, this is the bottle we'd hand you. As with any wine this age, stand it upright for a day before opening and decant it gently.

Robert Parker

"The 1989 is forward, with a cedary, ripe, moderately intense bouquet. Not a blockbuster, but spicy and delicious, with abundant quantities of chocolate and cassis-flavored fruit, this may be the finest wine from this property in decades." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

More about Chateau Grand-Puy Ducasse

Grand-Puy Ducasse is the odd one out among Pauillac's classified estates: its château doesn't sit among its vines but on the quay in the town of Pauillac, looking out over the Gironde, where the wine has been made for some two hundred years.

The story starts in 1675, when Arnaud Ducasse bought a modest house on the riverbank, and the family held the estate for generations. Pierre Ducasse, a lawyer, assembled vineyard land across the commune, and his son built the riverside winery in 1820. Today the owner is CA Grands Crus, the wine arm of the Crédit Agricole bank, which launched a long improvement plan in 2004 that has brought a new vat room and new cellars.

The 40 hectares are a patchwork: gravel hillsides in the north for Cabernet Sauvignon, the historic plots of the Grand-Puy lieu-dit at the center, and sandier ground to the west better suited to Merlot. The vineyard is planted to roughly 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, and has been plowed rather than weeded with herbicides since 1996. The wine spends about 18 months in French oak, around 40% new.

Expect Pauillac at its more elegant end: cassis, cedar and graphite with firm tannins that settle nicely with age.

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast leg of lamb with rosemary and garlic, beef Wellington, wild mushroom and thyme risotto, or a wedge of aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Pauillac Cabernet Sauvignon profile: blackcurrant and cassis with cedar, graphite and tobacco, on a medium- to full-bodied, firmly structured frame. With long bottle age, the style typically softens into savoury notes of leather, forest floor and dried dark fruit, as the tannins mellow and the finish turns dry, long and gently earthy.
