Here's a chance to drink classified-growth Saint-Julien with more than two decades of bottle age already behind it, so the waiting has been done for you. Gruaud-Larose was classified a Second Growth in 1855. Its 82 hectares sit on Garonne gravel laid down more than 600,000 years ago. The year matters for another reason too: 1997 is when the Merlaut family bought the estate, the family that went on to bring in sustainable and organic methods. If you like your Bordeaux with a story behind it as well as a pedigree, this bottle has both.

Antonio Galloni

87 points

"Red-ruby. High-toned aromas of plum and animal fur. Sappy and vinous, though not especially deep. Attractively silky texture, thanks to rather soft tannins. Notes of chocolate and leather in the middle palate and on the finish." —Stephen Tanzer

Robert Parker

87 points

"The 1997 Gruaud Larose is a soft, fleshy effort loaded with olive and licorice-tinged, black cherry and cassis fruit. Smoky, new saddle leather notes also emerge as the wine sits in the glass. Offering excellent richness, medium body, moderate weight, low acidity, and soft tannin, it will provide delicious as well as surprisingly complex, savory drinking for a decade." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

More about Chateau Gruaud-Larose

Gruaud-Larose is Saint-Julien at its most muscular: a big estate in a single block, making Cabernet-led wines known for needing, and rewarding, a couple of decades in the cellar. For claret that is firm, savory and built for the long haul, this is a house to know.

The story begins in 1725, when the Abbé Gruaud started planting vines here. Later in the century the Chevalier de Larose inherited the estate, added his name and enlarged the vineyard. In the 1800s it was split between two families, the Cordier family put it back together in the 1930s, and since 1997 it has belonged to the Merlaut family.

The 82 hectares of vines sit almost entirely in one piece around the château, in the south of the appellation, on deep Garonne gravel with more clay than most of its neighbors. Cabernet Sauvignon leads, with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a little Petit Verdot, and the wine spends about 18 months in barrel, much of it new. The farming has moved steadily toward organics, with certification from the 2022 vintage. The second wine, Sarget de Gruaud Larose, made since 1981 and named for a 19th-century owner, comes from the same vineyards.

Older vintages can be sturdy, even rugged; recent ones are more polished without losing the Gruaud frame. Decant, and don't rush.

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Rack of lamb with rosemary, roast prime rib, venison loin, steak with a wild mushroom sauce, or a wedge of aged Comté or Mimolette.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Saint-Julien profile of a Cabernet Sauvignon-led blend with Merlot: blackcurrant and plum, cedar, tobacco and graphite, on a medium-to-full body. With bottle age, wines of this style typically soften into savoury notes of leather, forest floor and dried fruit, the tannins turning fine and supple and the finish long, dry and earthy.
