Ancient ruby gravel over blue clay shot through with red ochre iron oxides: this is Pomerol at its most elemental, from a family whose roots in the appellation go back more than five centuries. The estate takes its name from La Croix de Gay, which the family describes as the appellation's only historic monument, a crossroads on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. The Raynaud-Lebreton family first arrived in Pomerol in 1477, and the family has been growing grapes since 1772. The wine is almost entirely Merlot with a small dose of Cabernet Franc. Professor Axel Marchal oversees the oenology. The family's stated aim is a wine that's very good young and great with age. So you don't have to bury it in the cellar for a decade, but it will reward you if you do.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2020 La Croix de Gay lacks a bit of focus and fruit intensity on the nose—a bit distant. The palate is rounded, sweet and fleshy with black cherries, balsamic and white pepper. There's more weight on the back end, but it comes across as a little lopsided at the moment. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"The 2020 La Croix de Gay has turned out very nicely, exhibiting aromas of cherries, berries and plums mingled with hints of dried herbs and espresso roast. Medium to full-bodied, with a fleshy core of fruit underpinned by sweet, powdery tannins, it concludes with a touch of youthful grip, but it's extroverted enough to be approached young." —William Kelley

"Smoky edge to the aromatics, vanilla, raspberry and coffee grounds. Lacking a little depth through the mid palate. It's enjoyable, and gains in both interest and complexity as it opens up in the glass. Good, if a little inconsistent. A yield of 38hl/ha. Axel Marchal consultant. Tasted twice."

Wine Spectator

90 points

"Ripe, fleshy and forward, this manages some succulence to the mix of raspberry and blackberry compote flavors. The slightly rustic finish reveals generous singed tobacco and warm earth accents. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2032."

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast duck breast with a cherry or fig sauce; rack of lamb with rosemary and garlic; beef tenderloin with a wild mushroom sauce; porcini risotto; aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Merlot-led Pomerol profile: plum, black cherry and blackberry with hints of truffle, cocoa and the iron-tinged earthiness the appellation's clay soils are known for. Typically plush and round, with supple, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity (think a softer, more velvety Bordeaux than the Cabernet-led Left Bank), finishing long and savoury, approachable young yet built to age.
