A classic northern Medoc claret in the celebratory magnum format. Chateau La Tour de By sits in Begadan at the northern tip of the Medoc, a Cru Bourgeois since 1932 and promoted to Cru Bourgeois Superieur. Its gravelly vineyards along the Gironde produce a dependable, Cabernet-led blend with Merlot and Petit Verdot. The 2009 was a warm, ripe, generous Bordeaux vintage, and in a 1.5L bottle it has aged gracefully and slowly. Now mature and ready, with the larger format meaning there is no rush.

Antonio Galloni

87 points

"(60% cabernet sauvignon, 35% merlot and 5% petit verdot): Bright ruby-red. Cassis, licorice, menthol and violet on the nose. Supple, smooth and moderately sweet, with a lightly medicinal character to its dark berry, licorice and herb flavors. Harmonious acidity extends the fruit on the slightly warm finish, which dusts the mouth with tannins." —Stephen Tanzer

Wine Enthusiast

88 points

"The wine has the richness of the vintage while retaining a more stalky black-currant character. The smoky tannins and fruit are integrated, creating a wine that will be ready to drink in the next two years." —Roger Voss

Tasting Profile

A mature, classically styled left-bank Bordeaux: savory and earthy with cassis fruit, cedar, and resolved tannins from a ripe, generous vintage.
