Labegorce makes the case that you don't need a classified-growth ranking to drink like Margaux royalty. The Perrodo family, who also own the third-growth Marquis d'Alesme, have invested heavily here, and the wine shows it: this is polished, perfumed Margaux with real refinement. The 2016 is Merlot-led (about 52%) with a healthy dose of Cabernet Sauvignon and dashes of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, from a near-perfect growing season. Expect ripe blackcurrant and plum lifted by graphite and that signature Margaux elegance. Drinks well now with a decant, or cellar it for a decade or more.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2016 Labégorce has a more introspective bouquet than its peers – a bashful Margaux, although with time I suspect it will gain more intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, a little pinched toward the second half, with cedar and graphite on the aftertaste. Broody at the moment - cellaring required." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

93 points

"The 2016 Labégorce is composed of 52% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot, aged in 45% new and 55% one-year-old French oak barrels. Deep garnet-purple colored, it leaps out of the glass with gregarious cassis, kirsch and black raspberries, candied violets, dark chocolate and spearmint. Medium-bodied, elegant, fresh and with exciting intensity, it delivers a fantastically long, fragrant finish. 12,000 cases produced." —Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Decanter

93 points

"Bravo for a strong performance in an excellent vintage from this non-classified estate in the heart of the Margaux appellation. Not as diaphanous as the region’s top-tier wines, but has smooth tannins. The 45% new oak ageing is nicely integrated on a palate that reflects charm from the majority Merlot in the blend, with breadth and depth that outclasses some underperforming classified growths."

Wine Spectator

90 points

"Features a core of freshly crushed plum and blackberry fruit, inlaid with singed mesquite, sandalwood and black tea notes. This is on the toasty side in the end, but the texture has a plush edge and there's enough fruit for balance."

Wine Enthusiast

"This estate on the north side of the village of Margaux is performing at its peak. As befits the vintage it's a rich wine with big tannins. But it also has the style that characterizes a Margaux, with a smooth, perfumed aftertaste." —Roger Voss

More about Chateau Labegorce

Margaux's classified growths have an elegant severity that not everyone appreciates. Labegorce embraces that spirit fully—a wine that rewards patience and rewards those who understand that Margaux isn't about power. It's about finesse, cut, and a kind of understated aristocracy.
