Langoa Barton is the 3rd Growth sister estate to Leoville Barton, both farmed by the Barton family for over two centuries, both made in the same cellar by the same hands. Where Leoville commands the spotlight, Langoa is the quieter, slightly suppler twin, and in great vintages it can be just as compelling for a fraction of the fuss. 2005 is one of the legendary modern Bordeaux vintages, deeply structured and built for very long aging. Twenty years on, this Saint-Julien is approaching peak: the tannins have softened into velvet, the cedar and graphite have settled in, and the fruit is shifting from primary to savory. A classical Left Bank claret in a perfect drinking window.

Antonio Galloni

92 points

"The 2005 Langoa Barton takes time to cohere in the glass, but eventually black cherries, black plum and a touch of mint develop. The palate is medium-bodied with just a little rusticity on the entry, dense tannins and fine acidity. The 2005 is a little muscular in style but nicely poised, with a slightly medicinal finish (a common theme of this vintage now that it is reaching age 20.) Tasted at the château." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

86 points

"The 2005 Langoa Barton is tannic, leathery and spicy, with a dense ruby/purple color, excruciatingly high tannin, medium body, and good ripeness, but the tannins are questionable and the overall balance possibly suspect. We’ll see what age does, but after ten years, this remains a hard, angular and austere wine." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Jancis Robinson

16.5 points

"Tasted blind. Very fragrant and winning. Dense, with coffee notes. Mint too. Ambitious. Dry tannins and just a bit dead on the end but very sincere." —Jancis Robinson MW

Wine Spectator

92 points

"Wonderful aromas of licorice, crushed blackberry and mineral. Full-bodied, with very well-integrated tannins and vanilla, berry and aniseed flavors. Has a long, long finish."

Wine Enthusiast

92 points

"Big, ripe, almost exotic, this has developed impressively over the past 18 months. Its tannins are certainly huge, but so is the fruit, warm, rich and enticing. Very powered, it thrusts black currants and acidity right up front." —Roger Voss
