Proper Haut-Médoc claret from a house whose stated watchword is "pleasure," and it shows in a wine meant for dinner, not for showing off. Château Larrivaux has passed from mother to daughter in the same family since 1580, which makes it one of the oldest continuous ownerships in the Médoc. The estate sits on gravelly soils in Cissac, right at the gates of Saint-Estèphe. Today it's run by Bérangère Tesseron (of the Lafon-Rochet family). The family builds its wines around Merlot, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot in support. The estate also makes L'X de Larrivaux (named for the first and last letters of "Larrivaux"), but this bottle carries the château's own name. Dry and medium-bodied, it's a bottle for anyone who wants real Left Bank character and pedigree without a special-occasion budget.

Tasting Profile

Expect a classic Merlot-led Haut-Médoc: plum, blackcurrant and red cherry, with the cedar, graphite and gravelly earthiness typical of the Left Bank. Typically medium-bodied, with fresh acidity, fine but firm tannins and a dry, savoury finish. Think of it as a rounder, more approachable claret than the Cabernet-heavy wines of neighbouring Saint-Estèphe.
