This label no longer exists. Bob Wilmers, who owned Chateau Haut-Bailly, bought the tiny neighboring Le Pape in late 2011, and from the 2022 vintage its vineyards were absorbed into Haut-Bailly outright, making the handful of vintages made under the Le Pape name a closed set. The property is a single block of nine hectares of gravel over sand and clay in Leognan, planted predominantly to Merlot with the balance Cabernet Sauvignon, fermented in temperature-controlled cement and aged twelve to fifteen months in about 30% new French oak by the Haut-Bailly team. 2019 was a warm, generous year in Pessac-Leognan that kept its acidity, and the Merlot-dominant blend makes this the most immediately charming end of the range: floral, silky, and open rather than austere. Drinking beautifully now and through the early 2030s.
