This is a Pomerol from 1998 that has already done its waiting: more than two decades in bottle, from the house of Château L'Eglise Clinet. La Petite Eglise ("the little church," a nod to the estate's own name) is a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the two grapes that run Pomerol, the small Right Bank appellation next to Saint-Émilion. It's medium-bodied and elegant rather than plush, which makes it a bottle for the dinner table more than the trophy shelf. If you've wondered what mature Bordeaux actually tastes like, a fully aged bottle from a serious Pomerol address is an easy way to find out. Stand it upright for a day, then decant it gently to leave any sediment behind.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic profile of mature Pomerol: Merlot's plum and dark cherry softening into dried fruit, with Cabernet Franc adding a leafy, graphite lift, plus the truffle, earth and leather notes that come with long bottle age. Medium-bodied and elegant, with silky, resolved tannins and fresh acidity, it typically finishes savoury and gently lingering.
