Lynch-Bages is the 5th Growth that has performed at 2nd Growth level for as long as anyone can remember — the Cazes-family Pauillac that built its reputation on richness, depth, and uncommon consistency across vintages both great and modest. The family has owned it since 1939 (Jean-Charles Cazes, great-grandson of the founder, runs it today), and that continuity shows in the cellar. 2001 was a classical structured Pauillac vintage — overshadowed at release by 2000, but a fundamentally well-built year that has aged on its own steady timeline. Twenty-four years on, the 2001 is fully mature and drinking at full song: cassis, cedar, graphite, that signature Pauillac smoky tobacco, dried herbs, leather. Tannins resolved, acidity bright, the wine's famed concentration now married to maturity. Drink over the next five-plus years.

Antonio Galloni

92 points

"The 2001 Lynch-Bages has a complex bouquet, well defined with a mélange of red and black fruit mixed with freshly rolled tobacco, sage and cedar. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit. It's sweet and candied with veins of orange peel and hints of sloes and fig towards the finish. I appreciate the harmony here, plus the persistence. Very fine, though on this occasion, it is just pipped by its millennial counterpart. Tasted blind at the Lynch Bages vertical at the château." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

88 points

"The fully mature 2001 exhibits aromas of tapenade, bay leaf, licorice, red and black currants, damp earth and new saddle leather. Medium-bodied and atypically elegant and charming for a Lynch Bages with soft, fully resolved tannin and a moderately long finish, it is much lighter than a great vintage such as 2000." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Jancis Robinson

16.5 points

"Mid crimson. Quite warm and aromatic. Readable and lively. Fresh and very 2001 rather than very Pauillac. Relatively light for a Pauillac but certainly pleasant." —Jancis Robinson MW

Wine Spectator

91 points

"Delightful cedar, bay leaf and savory notes lead off while the core of currant and blackberry fruit has moved into a secondary phase. The bay leaf and cedar elements hold a slight upper hand through the finish, giving this a pleasantly rustic hint."

More about Chateau Lynch-Bages

Pauillac's most approachable Fifth Growth is also one of its most consistently excellent. Jean-Michel Cazes built this place into a modern-day powerhouse while respecting tradition. Lynch-Bages offers serious wine at less taxing prices than its classified-growth peers—a rare gift.
